Mission Statement
The Metrology Institute is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to advancing measurement science as a recognized STEM discipline by partnering with educators, industry experts, and accredited institutions to build the training resources, career pathways, and public awareness that prepare the next generation of scientists, engineers, and metrologists.
As a nonprofit foundation, the Metrology Institute works through — not in place of — accredited educational institutions, industry organizations, and professional experts to strengthen measurement science as a recognized STEM discipline. We pursue this mission through five strategic commitments:
- We partner with metrology industry experts, consultants, and professional instructors to develop standards-grounded curriculum, training programs, and educational resources that reflect the rigor and practices of working calibration laboratories, quality systems, and measurement organizations.
- We support accredited educational institutions — K-12 schools, community colleges, trade schools, and universities — with training aids, course materials, curriculum frameworks, and access to expert guidance, making it possible for existing programs to integrate measurement science without building expertise from scratch.
- We provide technical documents, training materials, and public resources that increase awareness of metrology and its impact on safety, commerce, health, and daily life — helping educators, students, and the general public understand why the science of measurement matters.
- We maintain an educational platform and standards-verified knowledge base grounded in ISO/IEC 17025:2017, the NIST GUM (JCGM 100:2008), the VIM (JCGM 200), and recognized industry practices — ensuring that every resource the Institute produces or supports is traceable to authoritative measurement standards.
- We support research on the application of artificial intelligenceto measurement science education, exploring how AI can extend the reach, adaptability, and effectiveness of metrology training across diverse learner populations and career stages.
Vision Statement
A world where measurement science holds its rightful place alongside mathematics, engineering, and the physical sciences as a core STEM discipline — visible in classrooms, valued by industry, and accessible to every learner regardless of background, geography, or resources.
We envision a future where K-12 students discover that precision, traceability, and uncertainty are not abstract concepts but the foundation of decisions that protect lives, ensure quality, and advance discovery — and where clear career pathways connect that early curiosity to professional roles in metrology, calibration, and quality engineering that the global workforce urgently needs.
