Metrologists are Retiring Faster Than We’re Training!
America is facing a quiet metrology workforce crisis—and the clock is ticking.
Every day, seasoned calibration technicians retire, taking with them decades of precision expertise that keeps our aircraft safe, our medical devices accurate, and our semiconductors flawless. Meanwhile, the pipeline of trained replacements has slowed to a trickle.
We are losing institutional knowledge faster than we can rebuild it.
The gap is widening:
➤ 60% of advanced manufacturers cannot find qualified calibration technicians ➤ 72% say current training programs are outdated or inadequate ➤ Less than 5% of U.S. high schools offer ANY instruction in measurement science
Read that last statistic again. Fewer than 5%.
We’re asking young people to fill critical roles in aerospace, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductor manufacturing—without ever introducing them to the science that makes those industries possible.
This is an education emergency.
Without immediate investment in metrology training, America risks falling behind in the very industries that define our economic strength and national security. Innovation doesn’t happen without precision. Precision doesn’t happen without skilled people. And skilled people don’t appear without education.
The Metrology Institute exists to close this gap—urgently.
Our mission: Train and credential 10,000 calibration professionals by 2030 through modernized curricula, mobile training labs, employer partnerships, and accessible pathways for veterans, rural communities, and underrepresented populations.
But transforming workforce education at this scale requires support.
The time to act is now—not after the shortage becomes a crisis.
Your contribution to the Metrology Institute directly funds scholarships, curriculum development, and hands-on training that prepares the next generation of precision professionals.
